Drugs affect virtually every Australian family. Each year the use of alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs accounts for more than one in six deaths, more than 185,558 hospitalisations and enormous economic costs to the health care system, law enforcement and private industry in Australia.
The Prime Minister launched the National Illicit Drug Strategy "Tough on Drugs" in November 1997. It continues to form a significant part of the National Drug Strategy. The Strategy provides a balanced and integrated approach to reducing the supply of and demand for illicit drugs.
In addition, a range of demand reduction measures have been introduced as part of the Strategy towards prevention, training, treatment, monitoring and evaluation and research. Development and implementation of these initiatives is occurring in consultation with the Australian National Council on Drugs , State and Territory Governments, non-government organisations and the community sector.
For information on a range of drug issues, the Australian Drug Information Network [(ADIN)] website links to a comprehensive range of websites and information on alcohol and other drugs.
The National Drug Strategy website links to information on the National Illicit Drug Strategy , the National Alcohol Campaign , the National Tobacco Strategy and the National Drugs Campaign.
Specific information on drugs can also be found by following any of the links in the list of resources below or by following the links from the HealthInsite topic page on Drugs.
